NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Losing his starting job hasn't kept Kentucky senior Darius Miller from providing the leadership that has kept the freshman-laden Wildcats on track for a national championship.

When the freshmen needed help finding their classes, Miller was there. When it was time to work out, Miller made sure everyone was on time. When he needed to sit for the good of the team, Miller took a willing role on the bench even though freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was hesitant to take Miller's starting role.

"He's a great senior and great leader. When we're not doing good in practice he huddles us up and tells everybody to pick it up. He's a great player," Kentucky guard Doron Lamb said. "For Darius, coming off the bench on a great team like this, he comes into games and steps it up and gives us energy off the bench. That's his personality. He's been doing it since the summertime really. He's never changed."

Miller had every reason to be upset after Kidd-Gilchrist replaced him in the lineup.

His reaction? Not a peep.

If Miller has an ego, it can't compete with his drive to win it all with the Wildcats. He just might pull the true Kentucky trifecta in the process ? Mr. Basketball for the state, Kentucky high school champion and an NCAA title winner for the school he grew up loving in Maysville, Ky., about 65 miles away from Lexington.

Miller may or may not start in New Orleans when the Wildcats (36-2) play Louisville (30-9) on Saturday in the national semifinals. It hardly matters.

He's not a sixth man; he's Kentucky's sixth starter.

"He's our senior," freshman Marquis Teague said. "He knows what it takes."

Miller has always walked a delicate line. He was signed by Billy Gillispie, who was fired at the end of Miller's freshman season.

Coach John Calipari quickly weeded through the mishmash roster but liked Miller's ability to pick up the dribble drive offense, his unselfishness and his size. All the while, Miller had to deal with the spotlight of the school's rabid fan base that's starved for its first title since 1998.

"It was different for me. It took some adjustment living in I guess what you would say is fishbowl. ... Everybody sees what you're doing, pays attention to what you're doing," Miller said. "When we're around campus, people know who we are. We've got to watch what we do. We can't do anything silly."

Miller worked his way into a starting role ? 69 times in 76 games over his sophomore and junior years as Kentucky went deeper each time in the NCAA tournament. Then Calipari hauled in his third straight No. 1 recruiting class, and Miller became the odd man out to Kidd-Gilchrist.

Kidd-Gilchrist felt bad for bumping his teammate, went to Calipari and offered to go to the bench to give Miller back his starting role. Miller didn't want that. He said he wanted what was best for the team, what gave them the best chance to win.

Kidd-Gilchrist stayed. Miller sat with only one spot start over nearly two months until the SEC tournament final. This time, when Kidd-Gilchrist again told Calipari to consider a switch, Miller was in the starting lineup. Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt, but it sparked Miller in time for the NCAA tournament.

"For him to be able to do something like that, that meant a lot to me," said Miller, who is averaging 14.2 points in the last five games. "Just the way he showed support to me and the way the coaches showed support by letting me start in the SEC tournament, that meant a lot for me and got me going."

This would seem to be Miller's moment with all of the young Wildcats relying on his experience.

But there's still a personal hole in his resume. He's never had a memorable performance against Louisville in four previous meetings.

The first two years he played the Cardinals, he didn't score a point. He's never reached double figures against them, and in Kentucky's 69-62 victory on Dec. 31 he managed more turnovers (a career-high eight) than points (seven).

"The rivalry is huge," Miller said. "It's been nice for me to grow up in the type of environment like that, being able to see it my whole life. There's been some great games."

Knowing so much, Miller has learned exactly what to tell his teammates about it ? nothing at all.

"I don't even tell them, really. I don't try to feed into it or anything. That just puts more pressure on the team. That's something we don't need," Miller said. "If somebody asks me about it, I'll be like, 'Yes, it's a big rivalry for people in the state.' But they don't need to worry about that.

"They just need to worry about playing basketball."

Washington?s inability to pass meaningful reform has put insurance premiums and prescription drugs out of reach for many Americans. The proliferation of medical malpractice claims has led to an insurance crisis for doctors and medical professionals.

Everyone agrees that Americans should have access to affordable, quality health care. That can be done, for instance, by allowing health insurance to be purchased across state lines. Increased competition will lower the cost of coverage.

Syria defectors unite as violence rages

Syria's rebel fighters on Saturday set up a military council to unify their ranks and political opposition leaders called a meeting of all the dissident groups to forge common objectives as deadly violence swept the country.

Despite international envoy Kofi Annan travelling to Russia in a new peace push with one of Syria's few remaining allies, the army resumed heavy shelling of rebel hubs and stormed a deserter stronghold, monitors and activists said.

At least 28 civilians were killed nationwide, including two women and two children killed in the flashpoint province of Homs, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

Saturday's death toll also included 16 soldiers and two deserters killed in fighting, it said.

With the violence that monitors say has claimed more than 9,000 lives over the past year showing no signs of abating, the military and political opponents of President Bashar al-Assad piled the pressure on his regime.

The rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) said it had merged with a unit led by the most senior army deserter, General Mustafa al-Sheikh, to form a united military council aimed at closing ranks in the face of the regime's unrelenting crackdown.

At the same time the main political opposition group, the Syrian National Council, invited all factions seeking to topple the Assad regime to meet in Turkey on Monday to hammer out a "national pact" of common objectives.

Speaking from Turkey, FSA chief Riad al-Asaad told AFP in Beirut that the new military council "is a step towards guaranteeing the unity of the troops and armed forces (of the opposition) on Syrian territory."

Al-Sheikh would chair the council, an FSA statement said, while a lieutenant from his unit said that Asaad would be in charge of military operations.

Asaad "will control all brigades and all (local) military councils (across Syria) must place themselves under his jurisdiction," Lieutenant Khaled Ali told AFP in Beirut.

General Al-Sheikh and 10 other generals will be tasked with deciding the military strategy of the Free Syrian Army, and will be in charge of weapons and funds, he added.

The SNC said in a statement that the aim of the two-day meeting in Istanbul was to produce a "National Pact for a New Syria," and eradicate "the regime's dictatorship."

SNC member Mohamed al-Sarmini told AFP invitations had been extended to all the factions and members of the opposition, including three prominent figures who resigned from the SNC in mid-March.

Syria's fragmented opposition has struggled to remain united in the face of the regime's deadly crackdown on dissent that began more than a year ago.

The latest announcements by the opposition come ahead of the second "Friends of Syria" conference, which world powers are due to attend on April 1 in Istanbul.

The opposition's lack of unity and transparency has stood in the way of Western and Arab governments giving it military backing -- an option favoured however by Sunni powerhouse Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

On the ground the Syrian army rained mortar rounds on the central rebel hubs of Homs and Hama, monitors said, while the Observatory reported at least 10 civilians deaths in Homs alone.

Troops backed by 26 tanks also stormed Saraqeb in the northwestern province of Idlib, and "took up position to split the town in two," activist Nureddin al-Abdo told AFP.

Residents cowered indoors as explosions rattled Saraqeb and troops swooped to make arrests, he said from the town where there is a considerable FSA presence.

The army also used mortars to pound the town of Qalaat al-Madiq in the central province of Hama, which troops have been trying to seize for the past two weeks, the Observatory said.

Activists reported fierce overnight clashes between troops and mutineers in and around the capital, after a day of protests under the rallying cry "Damascus, here we come."

YouTube videos showed a huge night-time demonstration in the Kfar Sousa district while opposition activist Mohammed al-Shami spoke to AFP of "very violent" clashes in Damascus province with blasts heard across the city itself.

The deadly uprising that has gripped Syria for more than a year has largely spared Damascus, but has also rocked the capital in recent weeks.

Meanwhile two activists appeared in court on Saturday accused of forming a secret organisation and taking part in protests hostile to the regime, human rights lawyer Michel Shammas said, despite pledges by Assad to implement democratic reforms.

Amnesty International says thousands of regime opponents have been arrested over the past year, with many of them believed to have been tortured or otherwise ill-treated.

On the diplomatic front, UN-Arab League envoy to shore up vital backing from President Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov amid signs of waning Moscow support for its Arab ally.

Annan is due to meet the Russian officials on Sunday before visiting China on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both countries have twice vetoed UN Security Council resolutions aimed at condemning Assad.

Annan is carrying with him Assad's answer to a peace plan under which Syria could begin a "political transition" to a representative government, with no specifically defined role for the Syrian leader.

His visit comes days after Moscow backed a non-binding Security Council statement in support of the initiative after making sure it contained no implicit threat of further action should Assad fail to comply.

There are growing signs that Moscow is beginning to lose patience with Assad, despite his commitment to massive new Russian arms purchases and the granting of key naval access to the Mediterranean.

Irish PM resigns over cash-payments scandal

Ahern was one of Europe's longest serving premiers and widely praised for his work in resolving a three-decade conflict in Northern Ireland.

The three judges led by Justice Alan Mahon found that Ahern received at least ?209,779 ($276,000) in secret payments while in office and repeatedly lied about this under oath. The report stopped short of finding Ahern guilty of corruption, because they couldn't prove that Ahern gave favors to any of his cash donors when he was finance minister in the 1990s.

The judges did find two other former lawmakers in Ahern's Fianna Fail party, including former Cabinet minister and European Union commissioner Padraig Flynn, guilty of corruption for soliciting payments from property developers for personal use. They also found 11 past and present members of local councils guilty of the same offense.

While the report itself was a fact-gathering effort and not a direct finding of any criminal wrongdoing, Prime Minister Enda Kenny referred its contents to state prosecutors, the national police force, tax collection authorities and the Standards in Public Office Commission. Potential offenses include corruption, obstruction of justice and tax evasion.

The report "clearly sets out corrupt practices among a number of politicians," said Kenny, who declined to say whether he considered Ahern among them.

Ahern's former special adviser in government, Gerry Howlin, described the findings as "far worse than anything I expected or believed possible."

Bizarre testimony
Ahern, whose often bizarre and implausible 2007 testimony enraptured the nation, denied doing anything wrong, but resigned from office in 2008 after 11 years in power. He issued a lengthy rebuttal Thursday night accusing the judges of unfairness and vowing to clear his name.

"I am disappointed that the tribunal has said that I failed to give a truthful account," Ahern said. "... I never took a bribe or corrupt payment. I never made a political decision in return for a payment. I hid nothing."

Yet even his own party, whose name means "soldiers of destiny" in Gaelic, failed to believe him.

Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin announced after a late-night meeting of party lawmakers that he intended to expel Ahern from party membership. The decision was expected to become official March 30.

"The receipt by a senior office holder of large amounts of money which a sworn tribunal has held is of unclear origins, and the failure to give any credible explanation, requires an unequivocal response," said Martin, who served in three Cabinet posts in Ahern-led governments.

Trust 'betrayed'
He said Ahern's receipt of surreptitious funds, and his delivery of false testimony, "betrayed the trust placed in him by this country and this party."

No Irish politicians have been convicted of corruption as a result of investigations into the bribery culture at the heart of Irish property development. Prosecutions are hampered, in part, by the fact that the government passed no credible anti-bribery laws until 1996, leaving tax evasion as the only readily proven offense.

Ahern's longtime accountant and friend, Des Peelo, conceded that Ahern's testimony had been hard to swallow, but said the judges couldn't prove Ahern was lying.

"The fact that something is bizarre does not make it untrue. Some aspects of his finances were bizarre," Peelo said.

It investigated allegations that Ahern accepted money from a developer in return for favors, a charge he rejected. He said his finances were complex but not improper during the turmoil that followed the breakdown of his marriage in the 1990s.

Ahern had admitted to accepting an envelope filled with 8,000 pounds ($12,700) in 50-pound notes from businessmen after speaking at a function in Manchester in 1994, which he said was his speaking fee. In late 2006 it emerged friends and businessmen had lent him 50,000 euros ($66,000).

"He told me he was telling the truth," special adviser Howlin said. "His narrative is not believed, and it is damning and it is serious. ... His reputation has been very seriously damaged."

A Tuesday statement from the Pageant of the Masters art festival where he was a director says Henry died Sunday at his home in Laguna Beach, Calif. He was 92.

Henry worked in television for more than five decades and was noted for bringing black performers like Cole and Wilson to a wider audience.

He produced, directed and wrote 1956?s ?Nat King Cole Show? for NBC, which several network affiliates refused to air because of its black star.

Henry would later direct and produce variety shows for Andy Williams, the Carpenters, Glen Campbell and Barbara Mandrell, and also helmed telecasts of the Emmy and Grammy awards.
